It's wonderful to know that some of the best natural hair care and body care around, and the most holistic, is right at your fingertips. Keep hair care fresh and simple and watch your hair show the difference. This page give you some hair care tips for holistic hair care which are quick and easy, with simple kitchen or garden ingredients.
Rosemary Rinse for Glossy Locks:
Rosemary is traditionally known as the herb associated with hair. It has been said that it strengthens the hair and stimulates the scalp, and rosemary essential oil is also thought to stimulate the mind and lift fatigue. And it makes your hair smell good too!
Put a few sprigs of fresh rosemary in a heatproof bowl and pour on boiling water. Allow them to steep and, when cool, take out the rosemary. Use as a final rinse to keep hair glossy and sleek - rosemary also helps discourage dandruff. You can put the rest of the infusion into a pretty glass bottle and keep in the fridge, or somewhere out of direct light, for later use.
Alternative Rosemary Rinse:
Put a bunch of fresh rosemary into a heatproof bowl and add about two pints of fresh spring water at boiling point. Leave to steep for a few hours. Once the mixture has cooled, add 75ml of organic cider vinegar and a few drops of rosemary essential oil. Strain the liquid to get the rosemary leaves out, pour into glass bottles and cork them to keep them sealed and fresh.
Dry Shampoo for Greasy Hair:
Shake a little cornflower into your hair as a dry shampoo - perfect natural hair care, and how much simpler could it be.
The flour soaks up the grease, leaving your hair soft, silky and feeling great. This is something to use perhaps mid-week if you wash your hair twice a week, or every other wash perhaps. Dry shampoo is also really useful if you are travelling and need something to tide you over till the next time you reach a shower!
Nettle Vinegar Rinse for Dandruff:
Steep a handful of fresh stinging nettles in vinegar overnight. Use this solution mixed with water as a final rinse for your hair, making sure you get it onto the scalp too. This is a great hair tonic, giving you lovely glossy locks, as well as keeping dandruff at bay. You can then either make up a fresh batch each time, or put it in a jar or bottle and in the fridge for future use.
Dark Hair:
Another great natural hair care recipe is using a solution of vinegar and water as a final rinse for dark hair. The natural acidity of the vinegar has a toning effect, smoothing down hair folicles and bringing out rich glossy tones.
Light Hair:
Freshly squeezed lemon juice diluted with water, or cold chamomile tea - both are great as a final rinse for light hair, really accentuating the colour and allowing hair to shimmer and shine.
An alternative natural hair care recipe for blonde hair is to put a bunch of fresh or dried chamomile flowers (or a couple of chamomile tea bags) into a heatproof bowl and add about two pints of fresh spring water at boiling point. Leave to steep for a few hours. Once the mixture has cooled, add 75ml of organic cider vinegar and a few drops of lemon essential oil, or chamomile if you prefer, but lemon gives it a great smell. Strain the liquid to get the chamomile flowers out, pour into glass bottles and cork them to keep them sealed and fresh.
Hair Treatments for Thirsy Hair:
Beat an egg and massage it into towel dry hair root to tip. Wrap in clingfilm and leave from 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
Wash and towel dry your hair. Apply a liberal amount of good quality shop bought mayonaise, or home-made is even better, really massaging it in from root to tip. Wrap your hair in cling film and leave on for at least 15 minutes - overnight if you can manage it. You can also wrap a towel around the cling film to help keep heat in, increasing the moisturising effect of the mayonaise.
